The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established to feed, nurse and house young elephants abandoned by their mothers and displaced from their natural environment due to development projects. Most orphans cannot be introduced back to the wild, as other elephant family groups will not accept them. They enjoy a good life with their human parents and many find foster homes in zoos around the world. It is most interesting to visit the Orphanage at feeding time to see the baby elephants been bottle-fed. After which the entire herd is taken for a bath in the river.

Elephant Back Ride, take a tour of the surroundings the old fashioned way, climb aboard on a gentle giant and journey through the gardens of the hotel. A large wooden platform is secured atop the elephant; this platform could hold up to four passengers comfortably. As the elephant waddles through take in the view of Habarana and the surrounding wilderness. Be prepared to stoop down low to avoid collision with the tree branches that invade the path or be submerged to your knees in the lake. Riding on the backs of elephants was the primary mode of transportation used by kings in Sri Lanka experience the ride of a lifetime.
Minneriya national park, Situated in the Polonnaruwa district of the North Central Province of the country. It covers an area of 8,889 hectares. Many animals and species of plants are found in this National Park. Herds of Elephants and Deer are a common sight. Other animals sighted are Sambur, Monkeys, Mongoose, Leopard, Bats and reptiles such as Crocodiles, Pythons, Tortoise and Monitors. Around 160 species of birds, 09 amphibians, 25 reptile species, 26 fish species and more than 78 butterfly species have been found in the Minneriya National Park. The Minneriya National Park also consists of wetlands, which have global significance.
Sigiriya, one of the oldest tourist attractions in the world, and declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers its visitors nothing less than a breath-taking experience. Standing more than 200m tall over the surrounding plains, the Sigiriya Rock is said to be a solidified magma plug, from a long eroded and extinct volcano. Hidden in a cave along the citadel are some of the most magnificent ancient frescoes in South Asia. Seen today are, what’s said to be left of the 500 paintings of maidens that once covered a large area of the face of the rock. A total of nearly 1500 writings on the wall, include verses that date as far back as the 08th century.
Spice Gardens at Matale give interesting insights into spice production in Sri Lanka. The importance of spices in the minor export crops of Sri Lanka consist of Fragrant clove, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, mace and pepper, for which Sri Lanka has been farmed since ancient times, thrive in the hills.
Batik is an ancient art of mixing colours by using wax as the main component and today Sri Lanka is among the world leaders in the design of batik. Batik galleries and factories offer batik from simple single coloured designs to intricate multi coloured masterpieces.
Kandy, locally referred to as Maha Nuwara (meaning The Great City), is the Hill Capital and one of the most scenic cities in the country. It is also home to one of the most revered places of Buddhist worship in Sri Lanka. It is not only its places of historical significance that make Kandy a popular tourist destination, but also the shops displaying precious and semi-precious stones, skillfully crafted jewellery, handicrafts, colorful batiks and silks; Some of the main attractions of the city are: The Royal Palace Complex and its other buildings consisting of the King’s Palace, the Queen’s Palace, the Audience Hall, the Royal Bathhouse and Royal Summer House, represent the final flowering of Sinhalese architecture and craftsmanship. The Royal Bathhouse, on the edge of the lake, is a beautiful pavilion with a traditional Kandyan roof supported by white columns.
Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, the finest of its kind in Asia, the largest of the botanical gardens of Sri Lanka, couldn’t be better located. In the Mediterranean climate of Kandy, the gateway to the Central Highlands, the Gardens, at an elevation of 500 meters above sea-level, were tightly bounded on three sides by a loop of River Mahaweli (Great sandy river), the largest river of Sri Lanka. Peradeniya is believed to take its exotic name from Sinhalese names Pera (guava) and Deniya (a plain). The name also reveals, although Guava is not indigenous to Sri Lanka, introduction of the fruit to the island and cultivation had occurred even prior to the era of British Colonialists in Ceylon.
A journey through narrow passes, beside deep ravines and over gushing streams takes you to the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, Nuwara Eliya. Located approximately 2000 meters above sea level this town resembles ‘English’ with its colonial architecture gaining prominence. The temperature averages 10 ℃ and high mountain peak including Pidurutalagala is within this district. Vegetable plantations, scenic flower gardens, strawberry nurseries and walkways are a highlight.
Sri Lanka is one of the world’s largest exporters of tea. Since the introduction of tea to Sri Lanka in mid 19thcentury Nuwara Eliya has been the capital of the tea industry. For many miles prior to reaching Nuwara Eliya from either direction you will find acres and acres of tea plantations, in fact nothing but tea estates. There are many factories open for visitors which also have tea sales outlets.
Nuwara Eliya, which means the “city of lights” is also known as the city of eternal spring, where the air is pure, cool and distilled up through 1,884 meters. Windswept peaks lie shrouded in mist, while gaily-clad tea pluckers wind their way between the tea bushes. Listen to the wild music of the waterfalls. This is a holiday resort ideal for hiking, golfing and boating – the setting is a nostalgic reminder of the English countryside.
Kitulgala is a small town in the west of Sri Lanka. It is in the wet zone rain forest, which gets two monsoons each year, and is one of the wettest places in the country. The Academy Award-winning The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge. Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometres upstream.
Beruwala is a town, governed by an Urban Council. The name Beruwala is derived from the Sinhalese word for the place where the sail is lowered. It marks the spot for the first Muslim settlement on the island, established by Arab traders around the 8th century AD. A large population of Sri Lankan Moors, many of them are gem merchants, still live in the town particularly in the “China Fort”. Msjid-ul-Abrar, a landmark of Beruwala and Sri Lanka’s oldest mosque, was built by Arab traders on a rocky peninsula overlooking the town.
Shopping in Colombo: One of Sri Lanka’s best kept secrets is the shopping opportunities in Colombo sleek department stores and cool shopping malls are filled with designer clothing, shoes and handbags, plus handicrafts, home furnishings and more.

Colombo Bursting with life and colour, the islands largest city which was once the Capital of Sri Lanka, is now its Commercial hub. This modern city with an ancient heart is a monument to its colonial history. Its architecture is influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Today, it is a mix of modern architecture among colonial buildings. The remnants of Dutch and Portuguese domination, is seen primarily in the Fort, located north of the city. Pettah, where daily life overflows on to the streets, not too far from the Fort is a trader’s hub. It provides an interesting insight in to life as it is in a busy, tropical cosmopolitan city.
